The Emunah Migration

The sources are in agreement that cognitive and intellectual faith alone is insufficient. To properly fulfill his requirements, man must find a way to have the Emunah penetrate into his behavior and perspective. Why is this so critical and how it is done?

Ep. 23: Great Jewish Personalities: Rashi

The era succeeding the Geonic Era is the Era of the Rishonim. During this time, the Ashkenazic (Germanic) and Sephardic (Spanish) communities were separated due to the geopolitical instability resulting from the constant wars between the Muslims and Christians. For several generations, each community flourished and developed independent, and largely unaware, of the other. Both communities gave us Torah giants who revolutionized the world with their character and works. The greatest of the Ashkenazic Rishonim, and the foremost commentator on Talmud and Tanach, was Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, known the world over by his acronym – Rashi.

Ep. 22: The Middle and Late Geonic Era

The Geonic Era spanned for more than 400 years. During this time, the great Yeshivas in Babylon, Sura and Pumpedisa, were universally recognized as the epicenter of Jewish life. Its heads, known as Geonim, together with the political leader of the nation, the Reish Galusa, led the people with great skill. In this episode we look at some of the great personalities, groundbreaking developments, and existential threats of the era, and also examine the conditions that led to its ultimate dissolution.

The Pursuit of Faith: 4 Paths to Rudimentary Emunah

The first of the Ten Commandments instructs us to gain basic faith. The last one, “Thou Shall No Covet”, is a reflection of a much more advanced variety of Emunah. In this episode, we stress the importance to not rely solely on emotional or societal basis for our basic Emunah, and instead to pursue a path to faith on our own. These paths fall under four distinct categories.

Ep. 21: The Early Geonic Era

The story of the Geonim takes shape at about the same time as the Islamic Empire overruns much of the world, bringing the majority of Jews under their rule. Under the relatively tolerant rule of the Caliphate, the Jewish world flourished and an entire epoch of Torah greatness blossomed. During this period, the Talmud calcified its status as the authoritative and final word of Oral Torah, the first books of Halacha were written, and the Jewish world learned how to thrive in a Diaspora that spanned the world over.

Emunah in the Prism of the Afterlife

In previous episodes we have established that Emunah is the core objective of life. In this episode we explore some of the Jewish perspectives on the matter. We delve into our role in this world, our inhibitors to greatness, and what we have in store for us after death.

Mishpatim – Jewish Jurisprudence

The Torah is generally perceived as addressing matter of religion and the spiritual. In Parshas Mishpatim we see how it is an exhaustive guide to life in every arena, including governance of civil and criminal law. What are some of the broader themes of Jewish jurisprudence and how can they inform and inspire in modern times?

Ep. 20: The Rise of the Muslims

After the Talmud was codified and sealed, the Jewish communities worldwide came under protracted assault. There were several interconnected contributing factors to the conflict and turmoil that consumed the world: The Roman Empire was in long-term decline and splintering; the Sasanian Empire had shifting attitudes towards the Jews; there were frequent wars; and there was a rise in the ruthlessness of the ascendant Christians. Amid these tectonic, tumultuous tensions, an unexpected storm emerged from the Arabian desert that swept through centuries-old Empires.

Faith of the Farmer

Regarding three people we are told in the Talmud that they are people of limited faith: Noah, who entered the Ark as a result of the water; a person who prays loudly; and a person who has food for today and not for tomorrow and says ‘what will I eat tomorrow?’. Further, the Talmud declares that the farmer who plants is a paragon of faith. What about the farmer exudes faith and how can does this create an understanding of the Talmud’s standards of faith?

Yisro – A Kingdom of Priests and A Holy Nation

Parshas Yisro is a tale of two stories: The first is the episode of Yisro the father in law of Moshe. He abandons his post as the priest of Midian to join the people and provide valuable insight to the judicial process. The latter half of the parsha is dedicated to the Mount Sinai experience and the Ten Commandments. The Torah prefaces the Ten Commandments with the Yisro narrative because it contains important preconditions for Torah.
